compassionate conservatism....
would it or would it not be nice.... if you got to choose where your taxes went.... if you got to choose what your tax dollars were spent on....
one of the things that many tax payers hate.... is having someone else decide where their money goes.... for instance.... many many conservatives hate transfer payments.... where the president gets to play robinhood.... stealing from the rich.... legally.... and giving to the poor.... and.... many many liberals hate their money going to fight wars....
what if the taxpayer was able to choose where their taxes went.... within reason.... within limitations.... what if there were certain categories of non-profits that you could donate your money to.... categories of non-profits that both the conservatives and liberals both agreed to include.... and when you make a donation in one of these categories.... you not only are able to deduct the donation from your income.... but you also recieved a tax credit for your donation....
eye know that taxpayers are currently able to write off donations to non-profits.... that you can avoid paying taxes by donating money.... which takes it out of your income.... and you do not have to pay any tax on the money that you donate.... however.... in this system.... the only way that you can avoid paying ANY taxes.... is to donate ALL of your money....
so.... here is the great part about what eye am proposing.... under this new system.... when YOU donate money.... just like in the old system.... you do NOT pay any taxes on the money that you donate.... AND.... in addition to not paying taxes on the money that you donate.... you also receive a tax credit on the money that you donated.... which you can use to offset the taxes that you owe on the money that you did not donate....
let us look at an example.... let us say.... that the federal tax rate is twenty-five percent.... and the new tax credit is also twenty-five percent.... so.... now.... if you earned four million dollars last year.... and the tax rate is twenty-five percent.... then you owe one million dollars in taxes.... now.... lets say that you donate two million dollars of your income.... of the four million that you earned.... under the new system.... you owe NOTHING in taxes on the two million dollars that you keep.... you donated two million dollars.... and you kept two million dollars.... and you owe NO taxes this year.... this is because.... you donated two million dollars.... so now your taxable income is now two million dollars.... so.... in the old system.... you would owe five hundred thousand in taxes on the two million dollars that you kept.... however.... in the new system.... because you donated two million dollars.... you receive a tax credit of five hundred thousand dollars from your donation.... therefore.... you owe no taxes this year.... the five hundred thousand dollar tax credit cancels out the five hundred thousand that you owe on the two million dollars that you kept....
thats not fair.... thats not fair.... someone will say.... how come they get to keep two million dollars and pay no taxes.... and eye only earned forty thousand dollars.... and eye had to pay ten thousand dollars in taxes.... this just is NOT fair some of you will say....
but.... it is fair.... it is actually more than fair.... first of all.... this tax credit applies to everyone.... every tax payer can pay no taxes.... the tax payer who made forty thousand dollars.... can donate twenty thousand dollars.... and they to can pay NO taxes as well.... the new system IS fair.... it applies to EVERYONE exactly the same....
now.... lets look at what makes compassionate conservatism so awesome.... first of all.... it allows people to make sure that their taxes go to what they want it to go towards.... with limitations of course.... but think of the psychological benefit.... of you being able to decide who to help.... and how much to help....
the second reason compassionate conservatism is so awesome.... is because.... IF.... you decide to donate enough money to avoid paying taxes.... then.... twice as much money has gone towards bringing about good in the world.... the person who earned four million dollars.... would have donated two million dollars.... rather than paying one million dollars.... so.... twice as much money is spent on the common good.... if the money is donated.... rather than if you just paid your taxes.... and let mr high and mighty decide what to do with your money....
in my world.... there are ALWAYS choices.... here.... you get to decide.... to pay more.... and decide where your money goes.... or.... pay the tax.... and let robinhood decide where your money goes.....
